Children and prostheses

Many children born with missing or malformed ears due to congenital syndromes, have been fitted with implant retained prostheses.

The treatment is often delayed until the child is old enough to understand what is involved. It is important that the child understands what will be done and is motivated for the right reasons.

It is quite common for the doctor concerned to explain the possibility to both the parents and the child, but to wait until the child actually asks for one before going ahead. In the US, according to FDA regulation, a child must be at least five years old to have Vistafix treatment.
